At the moment I am the shift supervisor in the assembly area.
Does that mean you build the finished helmets?
Yes, the helmet shells go from the moulding machine, first to the cutting station, next to the paint shop and decal station, then from the paint shop to the final paint inspection.
And when they have been released from the final inspection, they come to the assembly area. And there we build the complete helmet on the basis of this helmet shell, all by hand. I have 21 employees on a line who build the helmet - completely from front to back in individual positions, each one doing one work step. And I oversee and guide that. IF I HAVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A TEAM, THEN I STAND BEHIND THEM.
NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. What’s the most important aspect of this?
You have to be able to organise and you have to be able to deal with people, have a feel for the employees and an understanding of their needs.
Piecework is not easy either. You have to take responsibility for it. My team gets all my support and they’re right behind me too. So if someone comes and wants something from my team, they have to get past me first. Do you ride a motorcycle yourself as well?
No, I don’t, but my daughter does.

She started working for SCHUBERTH in Braunschweig on 6 August 2001 as a riveter in the field of occupational safety. Today she is shift supervisor at our factory in Magdeburg and responsible for the assembly of the helmets for one of our most important customers. She leads a team of over 20 employees.
For this you not only have to have great organisational skills, what you need most of all is a feel for the employees and an understanding of their needs. Katrin Köhler’s team gets every possible support from her, in their day-to-day work and beyond. This is one of the reasons why she was named Employee of the Year last year.
